Mutton curry is one of the richest food in Indian cuisine. It comes with rich flavor, superb aroma, and a great source of nutrition, especially protein.

However, many people avoid cooking mutton curry at home due to various reasons. Some find it difficult to cook, some are unable to bite cooked mutton, and a few others find it difficult to swallow !!  Most of these problems are solved if you know the proper method of cooking mutton. And this is what we are going to tell you.

Other than that, you should also ensure to purchase quality mutton parts. Prefer purchasing Mutton chops, legs, shanks, and loin.  Here is an illustration showing the types of cuts:

Mutton Cuts


  • Mutton/मटन – 1 Kg/किलो
  • Onion/प्याज – 400 Grams/ग्राम
  • Tomatoes/टमाटर – 3
  • Ginger Garlic Paste/अदरक लहसुन का पेस्ट – 3 Table Spoon/टेबल स्पून
  • Green Chilly/हरी मिर्च – 2
  • Cumin Seeds/ज़ीरा- 1.5 tea spoon/छोटा चम्मच
  • Cinnamon/दालचीनी – 1 stick/स्टिक
  • Green Cardamom/हरी इलायची – 5
  • Turmeric Powder/हल्दी पाउडर – 1 tea spoon/छोटा चम्मच
  • Red Chilly Powder/लाल मिर्च पाउडर – 1/2 tea spoon//छोटा चम्मच
  • Garam Masala/Sabzi Masala/गरम मसाला/सब्जी मसाला – 1/2 tea spoon/छोटा चम्मच
  • Fresh Coriander/ हरा धनिया – 1/2 cup
  • Oil/तेल – 150 Grams/ग्राम


  1. Grind or chop onions, grate or cut tomatoes, cut green chilies, and make the ginger-garlic paste. Keep separate.
  2. Heat oil in pressure cooker, add cumin seeds, crushed green cardamoms, and a stick of cinnamon. Let crackle.
  3. Add ginger garlic paste and fry for a minute.
  4. Add onion, salt, turmeric powder, red chilly powder, garam masala, and fry till oil separates and onion turn golden brown. Keep stirring.
  5. Add tomatoes and cook for another 5 minutes.
  6. Add mutton and a cup of water. 
  7. Close pressure cooker and cook on high flame till 1 whistle.
  8. Slow the flame and let it cook for 30 minutes.
  9. Open cooker and check if the mutton is well done. If it is still not done, then pressure cook for another 5 to 15 minutes.
  10. Adjust seasoning and add chopped coriander.
  11. Serve hot with rice or roti.
